It would be shame on me if I let the government’s plans of
removing subsidy go without voicing my opposition to it. As long as you don’t
belong among the corrupt class who take their position high up there, you will
be adversely affected by this. It’s still very strange to me that the government
that claims to come to power with the vote of the people will not listen to our
cries.
The Trade Union Congress (TUC) over the weekend said it
would accept the subsidy removal based on certain conditions. This position is
not strange to me because I never believed the differing labour agencies are
sincere in the struggle for the common man. I am certain they are in this
country all these years to witness the previous subsidy removal and the failed
promises of government of improving life of its citizenry. The Nigerian Labour
Congress (NLC) on its part said it would under no circumstances accept the
removal of the fuel subsidy. I won’t delve into what constitutes the said
subsidy such as freight, insurance and demurrage has it makes no meaning to the
common man.
I wait to see if the umbrella bodies of our labour unions
will at this period prove to Nigerians that they are truly on their side. I
doubt it but will wait to see the outcome of their bluffs to the government.
