Nigerian people just have this love for used things. From
cars, airplanes, electrical gadgets and even the popular bend-down-select
clothes are what majority settle for.
It was with awe that I read that the Governor of Lagos State
defended the procurement of used coaches for the light rail project. He claimed
that the government isn’t paying for the coaches but the concessionaire is
paying for them.
The concession itself is a topic for another day because
majority of projects in Lagos are assisted projects. I won’t be surprised if
his ardent supporters don’t accept we the masses are paying for this directly
because we will be the end users. The coaches are 15 years old and are in good
condition according to him. The governor said it will take a period of about
eight years to build new coaches so the best option is to buy the used ones.
I wish them luck in the purchase and use of the
bend-down-select light rail coaches and I hope it would be durable enough for
Nigerian environment.
